How Do You Get A Mother to Stop Listening to the Pediatrician During A Check-Up?

You utter the words Heart Murmur casually as if you were speaking about someone in a textbook and not the child that the woman seated in front of you gave birth to just a few months before.

In an instant, I went from "Wow we are almost done and my kids haven't even catapulted off the exam table in an effort to swing from the light fixtures" to "Holy shit, did he just say Heart Murmur?"

"Hal, did you just say Heart Murmur?"

"Yes."

"Aspen?"

"Yes."

And, with that I sort of stopped listening. I mean I watched his lips move but I heard none of it. What I gather though is that chances are good it really is NOTHING.

But, you know, the whole not knowing will eat me alive until we see the Pediatric Cardiologist to confirm it really is nothing.

I guess mumurs are fairly common.

Yes. 1 in 100 kids has one. You know you just never think your kid would be one of them. And they've known about it since birth but given the 1 in 100 thing her doctor didn't want to do anything unless it continued past 2. Well she's 2, it's still there and until today I had completely forgot about the mention of the murmur that was discovered before we left the hospital.

I think the oxycotin had something to do with me forgetting about the initial discovery.

Obviously the initial discovery didn't phase me, the fact that it is still there makes me a little nervous, that's all.

I'm remember the feeling all too well when my pediatrician said those words when my youngest was still crawling. I'm pretty sure my heart skipped a few beats. I wanted to cry. She outgrew the murmur in time. :)

Don't make yourself sick over this. My son was born at 26 weeks....he weighed just barly a pound. He had a ton of issues and a murmur was always the least of the doctors worries. There are a ton of children with them...my son had one until it desipated this yr...he is 9...but hes always had one...sometimes they are something you work around...just like an alergy and sometimes youf orget they even have it. With my son...after he was 2...it never fazed him or me...Id forget until his next annual visit to which they would see how it was...but it didn't cause any problems for him and most the time it doesn't and it goes away over time...his was bad and first...because he was such a premie but then later...resolved itself. So, don't over worry yourself....I'm sure he will be fine!

Well poop. That's not what you want to hear! I hope you get good news from the next doc and hope it's SOON!

Ok, I don't want to make light of your fear, because I worried for about 8 years myself. But the doc is telling the truth. My 12 year old had one and he out grew it just in the last few years. It didn't effect him in any way. He played all of the sports etc. I think a check with a heart doc is probably a good idea, just for your own peace of mind.
Hang in there!

I am sure all will be fine - it's just when you hear things like that and the doctor just says it so matter of fact. Doctors are so used to things but sometimes they forget that there is a very sensitive, protective, worried mom hearing those words as her whole world stops at that moment. It is soooo hard to be a mom sometimes!

I have had a heart murmur my whole life, I think I even came home from the hospital with a monitor and I also have mitro-valve prolapse, basically it means my heart valves don't match up exactly . . . and guess what . . . I have lived a very, very normal life (meaning I've done everything I was suppose to do, I won't dare say I'm normal, I'm kinda cooky and quirky, but my heart hasn't stopped me from doing anything! I've gone on roller coasters, sky dived, got a tatoo, had the tatoo removed, drank, smoked, and all the good stuff too). . . these "conditions" have never held me back from anything . . . the only thing is when I have any type of "invasive medical procedure" (read surgery) I have to take extra antibiotics . . . that's it . . . so don't worry do much about it! :-)
