What do Hippies, Shaving and Tofu have to do with it?

There used to be a time when I updated this website regularly.

Man, those were some good times.

Today I want to talk about boobs. Okay, now that I have your attention I can get down to what I really want to talk about.

When I found out I was pregnant with Kyan the thought of nursing my child appalled me. In fact, I was downright disgusted by nursing since at that point my boobs served one purpose and it wasn't to feed anyone. But, my husband pleaded with me to just try nursing, for our families sake. So, I did.

At first my goal was six weeks. After six weeks, I set my goal for six months and at six months I knew I wanted to nurse my child for at least two years. Breastfeeding was something my mother never did....and I have no idea why.

Shortly after Kyan turned one I found out I was pregnant with Aspen. I nursed my entire pregnancy. When Aspen was born I nursed them both for four months before weaning Kyan.

Aspen turned 2 in August and Kyan turned 4 in September and do you know what that means? It means that I have been nursing for 4 years straight.

4. YEARS. STRAIGHT.

I've been nursing so long I don't know what not nursing feels like.

After the first birthday of both of my children we never once nursed in public. I do not share this intimate detail of my life with anyone except family. The few times I have - I've regretted it as I may regret hitting publish on this post. Nursing is a touchy subject. You are damned if you do and damned if you don't.

It's funny because before I was a mom I thought that the only women who nursed were hippies who didn't shave and cooked with Tofu. I guess I just want the world to know that I shave and I nurse my toddler and that I am allergic to Tofu.

Am I the only person allergic to Tofu?

Who cares if your allergic to tofu...you nursed for 4 years! I made it 5 months while I was pregnant, and then I just had to stop. Your like superwoman or somethin!

I think this post has really given your blog title some meaning.

Not judging. Hey breast feeding was for you. But after a kid is eating say...um carrots and chicken mcnuggets and like WHOLE meals. And thereby getting all their nutrition from actual FOOD (if we are good mommies and make sure they eat balanced) then is there a purpose to feed your kid through your boobs anymore? I know the first year it is all about them getting better nutrition and special stuff from breast milk...but after that? Is there a point?

I did it for a year and could never find a doctor or article that convinced me to continue once the kid was eating who foods.

but that is just me. But hey I am not allergic to tofu either!

Heck ~ back in the day I'd whip out the girls to feed my kids any damn time I wanted! But now that the girls sag to the floor the thought of nursing in public isn't for me. I know many who continue to give their children breast milk after 1 year but it's pumped not direct line. I think in the end all that matters is it was right for you.

I nursed my daughter for over two years---now I say my boobs look like pancakes with nipples on top. Ha.

Tofu. Gag.

My mother didn't nurse me either...at that time (70's) it was not encouraged by Drs...go figure.
I nursed my son until he as 14 months and my dd until she was 8 months. My dd didn't get into it, it was too constricting, she needed to be on the move...Sometimes my boobs still get that tingly feeling (you breastfeeders know what I mean) when they call me, or I feel like somethings wrong...The feeling of peace and contentment you recieve nursing your child is undescribable, unless you've done it...Bravo to you...4 years..ouch.

Wow..four years. That is amazing! I must say that I am happy you nurse in private. I am ALL for nursing (I am a nursing student and know all the health benefits of it)...but I'm not for nursing in PUBLIC! I've seen people wip out there boobs while they are walking around at the state fair. I've heard that after you nurse you don't view your boobs in the same way you did before...Maybe that is true for the MOM...but not to us innocent bystanders at the state fair! Kudos to you for keeping it private. BTW...found you on SITS

I hate tofu, have you ever seen how it is made? It is a gross process. I nursed 3 of my kids and pumped for one, she never caught on to the whole nursing thing.

Oh, and in case you are wondering I shave my legs AND I do the braziliion bakini wax. Cause I am super cool

Ok, I'm obviously the only Grandma on this blog (and still raising a 6 yr old!). I nursed all 8 of my children - yes, you heard me right 8! The longest was almost 4 years. I once added up the years I was pregnant and nursing and, hell, I didn't have a life for about 24 of the last 30 years!
I used to nurse everywhere, but discreetly. I could be nursing and talking to someone and they had no idea I was nursing.
As for tofu, it is a totally unnatural, over-processed, man-made food. I avoid it! Squishy, weird colored non food in my book!

Tofu - major yuck.

Nursing - KUDOS to You! :) I nursed all three of mine. The 1st one weaned at 1 year, and the 2nd and 3rd were almost 3 years old before they weaned. Different strokes for different folks, right?

Wow! I made it to 9 months and thought I was going to die from boredom. I felt like I was constantly sitting down to nurse.

I'm no hippy and tofu is nasty! lol

I kind of don't understand why people feel the need to argue with someone's decision to nurse or not to nurse. We all take care of our own kids to the best of our abilities. I nursed each of mine for 6 to 9 months. I guess I played both sides. :)

Hi,

We are a team of eight students from BU's School of Management who are in a product development class. The product that we are creating is a doll that teaches sun safety to young girls by having its skin on the arms and legs turn red when exposed to UV light (sunlight). We need assistance in getting feedback from mothers about our product.

If you are a mother with a daughter who is 15 years of age or younger, it would be extremely helpful to us if you could take our survey. It takes less than five minutes.

The link to our survey is: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=Mw5v6V3Hvfh3s7AzrJ5n0g_3d_3d

Thank you very much. We appreciate your help.
